Saul Perez

Saul Perez was a real fighter out of the La Colonia Boxing Gym in the Eastside of Oxnard which is where he grew up. Perez was trained by Martin Noriega who was the head trainer for many years out of the popular gym. "Martin Noriega was the mastermind. He was such an amazing coach! it was not the same (after he left the gym as head trainer)!", says Perez about his former trainer. He had many tough sparring partners to work with like future local superstar Feroz Fernando Vargas. He compiled an outstanding amateur resume that included a win over the late and great Diego Corrales as an amateur by points scoring 5-0. Diego would go on and defeat Oxnard's first world champion, Robert Garcia, in 1999 for his title as a pro and knocking out Jose Luis Castillo in what many call "one of the greatest fights in the history of boxing". Today Saul works for the Oxnard School District and is doing great. Salud to you, Saul Perez!
