As you know, in many of my posts I bring up the legendary gym of La Colonia Boxing Club in Oxnard. Today, people still talk about this gym and all its success. The man that made that gym possible was a boxing trainer and community leader by the name of Louie "Tiny" Patino. Prior to this, Patino lived out his mission to help the local youth by building a ring in his backyard. His goal was to get the local kids off the streets and into a positive environment. This got the attention of the Community Service Organization and the City of Oxnard which would later back him financially to open the La Colonia Boxing Club in 1978. The program was formed in an effort to get kids off the streets and stop them from joining gangs and do something positive for themselves by getting into sports. Did it work? After interviewing all the top fighters from Oxnard, I would say so. To the real old school Ventura County boxing fans, as “The Legend” aka Louie “Tiny” Patiño. Mr. Patino died on September 15, 2025. Thank you for your contributions, Mr. Patiño! Oxnard’s boxing history would have been different without you!
