Daniel "El Rebelde" Cervantes

About ten years ago, I would frequent this bar in downtown Oxnard on the corner of 5th st & A. There was a bartender there that was very friendly and smart. His name was Danny. At the time, I had just started a boxing page and would bring it up sometimes while conversing with customers and his co-workers who were boxing fans. But he never seemed interested in joining those conversations. One day when business was slow and it was just the two of us in the bar area, he confessed that he was once a professional boxer. I had seen him on TV representing the La Colonia Boxing Club in Oxnard many years before, but I didn't recognize him. He went by the name of Daniel “Rebelde” Cervantes and was trained by his father Fernando who, I believe, still trains local fighters today.

I was looking at his record, and it looks like he had one more fight in 2014 after a six year layoff which I did not know about. Back when I had talked to him, he had left the sport because he found other interests in life besides boxing. I hope Danny is doing well. Cheers to you, amigo!
